Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how iCatch Labs LLC ("iCatch Labs," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares and keeps personal information when you use Hoopers (formally, Hoopers Ranked Play): the website at https://www.hoopersapp.com, the web app served from it, any Hoopers mobile app we make available for iOS or Android, and related services (together, "Hoopers").
Hoopers lets basketball players find other players, challenge them to one-on-one games played in person, record results, and follow a Skill Rating ("SR") and other competitive records. Hoopers is for people 13 and older in the United States. Players 18 and older use Adult Accounts. Players 13 through 17 use Teen Accounts, which are set up with a parent or legal guardian and have additional protections described in section 11.
Questions: support@hoopersapp.com, or iCatch Labs LLC, 418 Broadway, STE 7369, Albany, NY 12207, United States.
Summary
- What we collect: your account details, the games and results you record, location readings for games when you allow them, and the records Hoopers builds from them, plus the social and safety actions you take (friends, connections, blocks, reports, vouches), court submissions, guardian details for Teen Accounts, and basic technical and error information.
- Location: we ask for a one-time location reading from your device for a game, and when an adult submits a court. We use game readings to check that both players were at the same place, and to work out which geographic boards an adult appears on. No other player sees your location readings.
- What others see: depends on your account type. See section 4. We never show your date of birth, email address or location readings to other players.
- Teen Accounts: Adult Accounts cannot find Teen Accounts through search, boards or other discovery features, Teen Accounts do not appear on boards, and Teen profiles are not shown to people who are not signed in. We notify a Teen's guardian about significant safety events, such as a new connection with an Adult Account.
- Sharing: we use a small number of service providers to run Hoopers. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. Hoopers has no advertising or analytics trackers.
- Keeping and deleting: we keep each kind of information for a set period, described in section 8. You can delete your account in settings. Some records, such as de-identified game history and legal records, are kept after deletion.
- Your rights: depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your information. Email support@hoopersapp.com.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account and sign-in: your email address and password (the password is handled by our authentication provider and is not visible to us). Your account is also assigned an internal identifier.
- Profile: your username, display name, and date of birth. Former usernames are recorded when you change your username.
- Guardian details: for a Teen Account, the guardian's email address, the guardian's confirmation that they are the Teen's parent or legal guardian, and the record of guardian setup and guardian notices.
- Games and results: challenges you send or answer, the game format, the results you submit, and related times and status.
- Social actions: friend requests and friendships, Play Connections between Teen Accounts and Adult Accounts, players you block, and vouches you give after a game.
- Reports: when you report a player, the reason you choose and any details you write.
- Court submissions: when an adult suggests a court, its name, a location pin captured from their device, the accuracy their device reports for that reading, whether it is indoor, its category, what they say about access, and any notes. Teen Accounts cannot submit courts.
- Communications: messages you send us, for example to support@hoopersapp.com, including requests to correct your date of birth.
Information collected when you use Hoopers
- Location readings for games: when you check your location for a game, and your browser or device permission allows it, we record one location reading for you for that game: coordinates rounded to four decimal places (roughly 11 meters), the accuracy your device reports, and when we received it. We do not track your location continuously or in the background.
- Activity records: your daily activity streak, in-app notifications, and whether you have read Account Mail messages.
- Legal acceptance records: which versions of our legal documents you accepted or acknowledged, and when.
- Technical and log information: our hosting and authentication providers record technical information when you use Hoopers, such as your IP address, browser and device type, and the pages or functions requested, in server and security logs.
- Error reports: when something breaks, an error report is sent to our error-monitoring provider. See section 5.
- Bot protection: when you sign up, sign in, reset a password or request a new confirmation email, our bot-protection provider, hCaptcha, collects information from your browser and device to tell people from automated programs.
Information Hoopers creates
- Account type: whether your account is an Adult Account or a Teen Account, worked out from your date of birth.
- Competitive records: SR for each format, Overall SR, rank, Standing, provisional status, win-loss records, rating history, game status and classification, and competitive distinctions such as Everest. The Competitive Rules explain these.
- Integrity records: automated integrity signals and review outcomes relating to games, including whether location readings supported that both players were at the same place. These records do not contain your coordinates.
- Game geography: for a game where both players' location readings fall in the same U.S. county, we record that county for the game.
- Geographic membership: from the counties of your recent rated games, we work out your current State, and where applicable your Metro and Region, which decide the geographic boards an Adult Account appears on.
- Safety and enforcement records: records about age corrections, suspected age misrepresentation, guardian setup problems, restrictions and other enforcement actions on an account.
- Administrative and security records: records of actions taken by Hoopers administrators, such as reviewing a report or resolving a game, and of security events.
Information from other people
- Other players: results another player submits for a game with you, reports about you, vouches for you, and challenges, friend requests and connection requests sent to you.
- Guardians: for a Teen Account, what the guardian gives us during guardian setup and when they contact us.
- Organizations and public sources: if you are affiliated with an organization in Hoopers, we may receive or check information about that affiliation from you, from the organization, or from publicly available sources. See section 4.
2. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Run Hoopers: create and secure your account, let you find and challenge players, record games and results, and send in-app notifications and Account Mail.
- Apply age rules: decide whether you are eligible, whether you have an Adult Account or a Teen Account, and which features and protections apply to you, and change a Teen Account to an Adult Account at 18.
- Operate Teen Account protections: set up and keep the guardian link, limit discovery of Teen Accounts, manage Play Connections, and send guardian notices.
- Produce competitive records: calculate and display SR, rank, Standing, records and boards, place eligible players on geographic and organization boards, and keep game and rating history.
- Protect competitive integrity: use location readings, result submissions, automated integrity signals and human review to decide how a game counts, and to detect and investigate false results, manipulation, duplicate accounts and abuse.
- Keep people safe: review reports, investigate age misrepresentation and guardian fraud, enforce our Terms and Acceptable Use and Safety Policy, and apply blocks.
- Moderate courts: review court submissions and list approved courts.
- Communicate with you: send account emails (such as sign-up confirmation and password reset), respond to your messages, and tell you about changes to our legal documents and important account or service matters through Account Mail.
- Find and fix problems: monitor errors and keep Hoopers working.
- Meet legal obligations: keep records of legal acceptance, respond to lawful requests, and establish or defend legal claims.
We do not use your personal information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
3. Location information in more detail
When we ask. Your browser or device asks for your permission before Hoopers reads your location. We read it once when you check your location for a game, and once when an adult submits a court. You can refuse or turn off location permission in your browser or device settings. If you do, you can still use Hoopers, but a game may not be able to count as rated, and you will not be able to submit a court.
Game readings. We compare the two players' readings for a game to see whether they support that both players were at the same place. We also use them to identify the U.S. county where the game was played, which feeds geographic membership. We never show your readings to another player.
Who at Hoopers can see readings. Hoopers staff who review games see whether the two readings matched, did not match, were missing or were inconclusive. They do not see coordinates as part of ordinary review.
Teen location readings. A Teen Account's game readings are used only to check how the game counts and for the safety, security and legal purposes in this policy. They are never shown to other players, on profiles, on boards, through discovery, or to guardians in notices, and are never used to show how close a Teen is to anyone. Only Hoopers' highest-level administrators (the Principal and Chief levels) can be authorized to see a Teen's coordinates, and only with a separate authorization for this kind of review and a specific integrity, safety or legal matter that needs it. No other Hoopers staff can see a Teen's coordinates, including staff who review games, who see only whether the readings matched, did not match, were missing or were inconclusive. Each access to a Teen's coordinates is recorded with who looked, which account or game, when and why.
What others can infer. An Adult Account's Standing on Metro, State and Region boards can be seen by other signed-in players, including on the adult's profile. That can reveal the general area where the adult plays. It does not reveal where they were at any particular time. Teen Accounts do not appear on boards.
Court pins. Hoopers administrators who review courts can see the location pin and accuracy an adult submits. If a court is approved, the court's name, location and access information may be listed in Hoopers. The submitter's identity is not shown with the listing.
4. What other people can see
| Who | What they can see about an Adult Account | What they can see about a Teen Account |
|---|---|---|
| People who are not signed in | The display name, username and the month the account joined, on its profile page. | Nothing. Teen profiles are not shown to people who are not signed in. |
| Signed-in Teen Accounts | Everything above, plus SR, rank and win-loss record in each format, current geographic Standings, and place on boards. | The display name, username, month joined, SR, rank and win-loss record in each format. |
| Signed-in Adult Accounts | Everything above, plus SR, rank and win-loss record in each format, current geographic Standings, and place on boards. | Nothing through search, boards or other discovery. After the Teen starts a Play Connection with that adult: the display name, username, month joined, SR, rank and win-loss record, and the fact that the account is a Teen Account. |
| Players searching by username | Username and display name. | Other Teen Accounts see the username and display name. Adult Accounts see nothing. |
| An opponent | The game, its format and its final outcome. While a result is pending or under review, Hoopers does not show either player what the other submitted. | The same. |
| Members of an affiliated organization | Place on that organization's boards. | Nothing on boards. Teen Accounts do not appear on boards. |
Confirmed game results, including who played and the outcome, may be visible to signed-in players who can see both players.
Other interactions. A player who sends or receives a friend request or connection request with you can see the request and, if accepted, the friendship or connection. If you block a player, we do not notify them, and you and that player will no longer be able to find, challenge or friend each other in Hoopers. A player you report sees nothing about the report. A player you vouch for sees nothing; players cannot see who vouched for them.
Hoopers administrators. Authorized Hoopers administrators can see account, game, report, court submission, affiliation, guardian and related records, as their role allows, to operate and protect Hoopers. Access to a Teen's location coordinates is limited as described in section 3.
Never shown to other players. Your email address, date of birth, exact age and location readings. Other players may be able to tell that an account is a Teen Account from how Hoopers works, for example because it does not appear on boards.
If you deactivate your account, your profile is hidden until you reactivate. If you request deletion, your profile is hidden during the cancellation period.
Organization affiliation. An affiliation links your account to an organization in Hoopers, such as a school, club or program. An affiliation is added when you request it, or when the organization confirms its relationship with you. Before adding one, Hoopers may check it using information you give us, information the organization gives us, or publicly available information. We do not add affiliations for players who have not requested them unless the organization has confirmed the relationship.
5. How we share information
We share personal information only as described here.
Service providers. These companies process information for us to run Hoopers:
| Provider | What it does for Hoopers |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, and account emails such as sign-up confirmation and password reset. |
| Vercel | Website and app hosting, and server logs. |
| hCaptcha | Bot protection on sign-up, sign-in, password reset and confirmation-email requests. hCaptcha processes device and browser information under its own privacy policy. |
| Sentry | Error monitoring. When something breaks, Sentry receives an error report with technical details: the error, the page address without its query string, and your browser and operating system type. We configure it not to attach your account identity, cookies, form contents or request data to error reports. |
Guardians. For a Teen Account, we share with the linked guardian the notices described in the Terms, such as a notice that the Teen established a Play Connection with an Adult Account, what that connection allows, and how to review or remove it where Hoopers provides that control. Guardian notices do not include location readings.
Other players and the public. As described in section 4.
Organizations. If you have or request an affiliation, we may share with the organization what is needed to confirm it.
Legal and safety. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is needed to comply with law, legal process or a government request; to protect the safety of any person; to prevent fraud or abuse; or to protect the rights of iCatch Labs or Hoopers users. Where the law requires it, we report apparent child sexual exploitation to the appropriate authorities.
Business transfers. If iCatch Labs is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy.
With your direction. When you ask us to share information.
We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral or targeted advertising.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
Hoopers uses only the technologies listed below. It does not use advertising cookies, analytics cookies, tracking pixels or social-media trackers.
| Technology | Where it is stored | Purpose | Needed for Hoopers to work? |
|---|---|---|---|
Authentication cookies (names beginning sb-) | Cookies set by Hoopers | Keep you signed in and secure your session. | Yes |
| hCaptcha | hCaptcha's own cookies and browser storage, on its own domains, on sign-up, sign-in and related pages | Tell people from automated programs. | Yes, for those pages |
Theme preference (theme) | Your browser's local storage | Remember whether you chose light or dark mode. Removed when you choose the system setting. | No, but it holds no personal information |
| App files cache | Your browser's service worker cache | Store Hoopers' own app files, such as scripts, styles, fonts and images, so the app loads faster. We configure it not to store your private pages or account data. | Supports performance |
| Error monitoring | No cookie | Sentry's error reporting does not set cookies. | Not applicable |
You can clear cookies and site data in your browser settings. If you block the authentication cookies, you will not be able to sign in.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. Because we do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, there is no sale or sharing for these signals to opt you out of.
7. How we protect information
We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information, such as access controls that limit administrators to what their role needs, stricter limits on access to Teen location readings, and records of administrative actions. No method of storing or sending information is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee security.
8. How long we keep information
We keep information for the periods below. A "hold" means we keep specific information longer because of an active dispute, integrity investigation, security matter or legal obligation. When a period ends, we delete the information or reduce it to a de-identified form. The same periods apply to Adult Accounts and Teen Accounts.
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Account and profile information | While your account exists. On deletion, see section 9. |
| Guardian details for a Teen Account | While the Teen Account exists and the guardian link is in place, and afterwards with the account's safety and enforcement records where they are needed. |
| Login email and sign-in identity after deletion | Our target is to remove or release it within 30 days after your deletion is completed. |
| Location readings for games | 90 days from when the reading was received. A hold delays deletion but does not restart the 90 days. Once a hold ends, readings already older than 90 days are deleted at the next scheduled deletion. |
| County recorded for a game | 12 months, after which it is removed or reduced to the least detailed form still needed for historical records. |
| Geographic membership | Only your current membership. It is recalculated, and we do not keep a history of your past memberships. |
| Court submission pin, reported accuracy and notes | While the submission is pending, then 90 days after it is approved, rejected, withdrawn or resolved as a duplicate. A listed court can remain after the submission details are deleted. |
| Reports and moderator notes | 24 months after the report is closed, longer only under a hold for enforcement, security or legal reasons. |
| Safety and enforcement records, including age and guardian records | 24 months after the matter is closed, or longer while an account restriction they support is in place, and longer under a hold. |
| Blocks | While the block is in place, and for up to 90 days after it is removed. |
| Vouches | While they remain relevant to active accounts and to the game they came from. After account deletion, we remove the direct link to your identity where feasible. |
| Organization affiliation history | While the affiliation is active, plus 24 months after it ends. |
| Friendships, Play Connections, friend and connection requests, and notifications | Until they are removed, or until your account deletion is completed. |
| Former usernames | A former username points to your profile for up to 30 days after you change it. The record is removed when your account deletion is completed. |
| Game history, rating history and integrity records | Long term, to keep competitive records accurate for everyone. After account deletion they are kept in de-identified form, linked to "Deleted player" rather than to you. |
| Everest and other competitive distinctions | Long term, subject to correction or voiding under the Competitive Rules. |
| Legal acceptance records | While your account exists, plus 7 years after it is closed. |
| Administrative and security records, including records of access to Teen location readings | 3 years, longer during an active investigation or under a legal hold. |
| Error reports held by Sentry | Up to 90 days. |
| Server and security logs held by our providers | For the limited periods set in those providers' services. |
| Messages you send us | As long as needed to handle your request and keep a record of it. |
These periods are our own policy choices. They are not periods set by law, except where a law requires a particular period.
9. Deactivating or deleting your account
Deactivate. In your account settings, you can deactivate your account. This hides your profile and stops you from starting games or accepting challenges until you reactivate.
Delete. In your account settings, you can request deletion. You have 7 days to cancel. After that, we complete the deletion:
- your profile is de-identified: your display name becomes "Deleted player," your username is released, and your date of birth is removed;
- your former usernames, friendships, friend requests and notifications are deleted;
- your sign-in identity is ended, so your email and password can no longer be used to sign in to that account, and our target is to remove or release your login email within 30 days; and
- other information follows the periods in section 8.
What stays after deletion, and why. Games you played are also part of your opponents' records. We keep game results, rating history and integrity records in de-identified form so other players' records stay accurate. We also keep reports, safety and enforcement records, legal acceptance records, and administrative and security records for the periods in section 8, and any information we must keep by law. These records do not present your account as active.
You can also ask us to delete your information by emailing support@hoopersapp.com. A linked guardian can contact us at the same address with questions or concerns about a Teen Account.
10. Your choices and rights
In Hoopers. You can change your display name and username in settings, turn off location permission in your browser or device, block players, deactivate your account, and request deletion.
Requests to us. Depending on the state where you live, you may have the right to:
- know whether we process your personal information, and access it;
- correct inaccurate information (for example, your date of birth, which you cannot change yourself in the app);
- delete your information;
- get a copy of your information in a portable form;
- opt out of the sale of personal information, targeted advertising, or certain profiling (we do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising);
- limit the use of sensitive personal information, where that right applies; and
- not be treated differently for using these rights.
To make a request, email support@hoopersapp.com. We will need to confirm your identity, usually by matching the request to your account. You may use an authorized agent where your state allows it; we may ask for proof that the agent is authorized. We will respond within the time your state's law requires.
Some requests are limited by law. For example, we may keep information we need to keep other players' records accurate, to protect against fraud or abuse, to protect minors, or to meet legal obligations, as described in sections 8 and 9.
Appeals. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision or emailing support@hoopersapp.com. If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.
California "Shine the Light." We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.
11. Children and Teen Accounts
Under 13. Hoopers is not for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will close it and delete their information, except what we must keep by law. If you believe a child under 13 is using Hoopers, contact support@hoopersapp.com.
Teen Accounts (13 through 17). A Teen Account is set up with a parent or legal guardian. In addition to the rest of this policy:
- Adult Accounts cannot find Teen Accounts through search, boards or other discovery features, and Teen profiles are not shown to people who are not signed in;
- Teen Accounts do not appear on boards;
- a connection between a Teen Account and an Adult Account can only be started by the Teen, and we notify the Teen's guardian when one is established;
- Teen Accounts cannot submit courts;
- a Teen's location readings are subject to the stricter access limits in section 3; and
- we do not sell Teen personal information or use it for targeted advertising.
We do not check guardianship against government records. We rely on the guardian's confirmation during guardian setup.
Turning 18. When a Teen Account holder turns 18, the account becomes an Adult Account automatically and the Adult Account parts of this policy apply from then on.
Identity verification. Hoopers does not currently ask players for government identification. If we later offer identity verification, for example for an official rating track, we will update this policy before it starts.
12. United States only
Hoopers is intended for people in the United States. Our service providers may store and process information in the United States or in other countries where they operate.
13. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. We will post the updated version with the date it takes effect. If we make a material change, we will tell you through Account Mail, and by email where that capability exists, before or when the change takes effect.
